How to drape a saree – Zarimysore Skip to content

Drape

Three drapes we are asked for

Start with the nivi drape. It is the one most Zarimysore sarees are pleated for. The other two are small changes of the same cloth.

01Nivi

  1. Tuck one end at the waist, at your right, and take the cloth once around.
  2. Make 5 to 7 even pleats, each about a finger wide, and tuck them at the centre so they open towards your left.
  3. Take the rest around your waist again.
  4. Bring the pallu across your chest from the left and drop it over the left shoulder. Pin it to the blouse if the zari is heavy.

02Seedha pallu

Pleat as for nivi, then bring the pallu from the right side across the front and over the right shoulder, so the pallu falls in front. Many lighter soft silks sit well this way.

03Gujarati drape

Take the pallu from the back to the front over the right shoulder, then spread it across the chest and pin it. The pleats stay in front. It keeps a heavy pallu visible, which suits a festive Banarasi.

The first time, drape before the event, not in the car. If the pallu is heavy, a small safety pin at the shoulder saves the pleats.
